CoroAllegro Season Notes

Music sets us free

As I look at the music we are performing in this fall’s concert, CoroAllegro gets to step into a 900 year repertoire of music that expresses a full emotional scope, from extreme joy to intense sorrow, from the tenants of deep faith, to the marvel of the created world, to the joy of music itself.
This past week I attended a funeral, and was reminded of the place that music holds in the human experience.  Around 300 people gathered to pay their respects to the deceased and his family. As the funeral service progressed, the family placed three pieces of music that were to be sung by the gathered.  This music was obviously poignant to the family, whether it spoke to their grief, or reminded them of their departed, or was credited as their beloved’s favorite.
Come, experience what this beautiful music can set free in you.
Music provided each person the vehicle either to express or experience what was needed.
It struck me that, as 300 people were standing and attempting to sing mostly unknown music, it meant very different things to each person, yet met each person where they were.  For some, the text of the songs was a crescendo, or maybe resolution, of their personal grief. For others, it was a chance to reaffirm in an extremely trying time the tenants of their faith. For still others, the melodies and chord structures provided a soundtrack for their continued processing of this very difficult time. Music provided each person the vehicle either to express or experience what was needed.
Music has always held that position in our world.  It allows us to express great communal emotions, or our own individuality.

As I look at the music we are performing in this fall’s concert, CoroAllegro gets to step into a 900 year repertoire of music that expresses a full emotional scope, from extreme joy to intense sorrow, from the tenants of deep faith, to the marvel of the created world, to the joy of music itself. We even experience a piece of music sung in a made up language. Though this piece lacks textual significance, you will be moved and communicated to, in ways that only music can do.  Come, experience what this beautiful music can set free in you.
