There are so many choices for holiday concerts every year, and each concert promises to be the best. But is the best what we are really looking for in a holiday concert? I think what we are really looking for is an experience. Something that will get us into the proverbial holiday spirit. Something that we will remember. Something that is different than all of the other offerings out there.
A common misconception is that singers practice just in rehearsal, one or two nights a week. The truth is, to make the beautiful music that you hear at a concert, singers practice quite a bit outside of rehearsal, and it doesn't always look like you'd imagine.
Few composers make me think of Christmas time more than Bach. Perhaps it is because Johann Sebastian Bach was such a prolific composer that he was able to write so many works for Advent and Christmas, or perhaps it is because his music is so evocative of classical Christmas music to me.
