Sweeney Todd: a fictional character who made his first appearance in 1846 in a Victorian penny dreadful entitled “The String of Pearls.” The story of the demonic barber quickly became a popular urban legend. The most famous retelling of the tale is definitely Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Over the years, CoroAllegro has explored the choral repertoire from chant to 21 century music. Now under the baton of Jeffrey Dokken, the ensemble is exploring secular music and stretching our choral wings and technique.
In my first blog of the season, I spoke about the significance that CoroAllegro rehearsals hold for me - the ability to let go of daily stresses and just be, a member of a group focused on the shared goal of creating something beautiful together. This reflection prompted me to explore beyond my personal experiences with music to see if what I experienced was the norm.
